UNIQUE -- this word describes both you and me
In this sea of humanity, we are similar, but never the same - all are made of the elements of Fire, Air, wind, water and all the minerals like Hydrogen, Carbon, calcium, sodium etc. and yet each one of us is also different with our thoughts, emotions, sensations. We react and respond to situations differently. I could go on with the innumerable ways we are individuals.
Our personalities are different, and, in some cultures, they have likened them to the natural basic elements which we are made of. The Chinese classify creations into 5 - Fire, Water ,Earth , Metals and Wood whereas the Ancient Ayurvedic system separate them into 3, the Pitta , Vata and Kapha, the Samkhya says 25 elements ( Tattvas)and the Enneagram into 9 based on emotions. The deductions maybe diverse but they are all ancient, experienced, and proven observations and they all stress that health is a result of balance of all the elements. Any imbalance can lead to illness. This recognition of imbalance is dependent on the skill of the healer and is important in the restoration of health .
It then becomes reasonable to say that one medicine cannot not cure everyone and that medicine needs be chosen, which would most suit the ill person and his/her illness . Homeopathy recognizes this especially important fact. This forms a base of homeopathy and is the skill which a trained homeopath works hard to achieve.
Though the healing arts have been there in all indigenous cultures all over the world since time immemorial and the remedies are taken from the natural world, the formal experimenting and systematic documentation were done by Samuel Hahnemann in 1796. The word Homeo -originates from the Greek word : Homoios meaning ‘same’ and ‘Pathy’ also from Greek meaning disease. The combined word ‘Homeopathy’ was also coined by Hahnemann. Healing here is customized for the problems of the unique individual by understanding and analyzing the entire aspects of the individual. There are innumerable remedies available but the right one that fits that person’s symptoms, and the person will be the right remedy.
In this therapy, one medicine will not relieve headaches in everyone. The practitioner must use powers of listening, comprehension, observation , understanding, knowledge and empathy to arrive at a prescription. This is the Art of homeopathy
